Musical variety a fair highlight
By Jerry Webber

Blues, Flamenco, Country, Bluegrass, Rock’n’Roll and more, the stage is set for the Encinitas Street Fair and its entertainment. Well, actually four stages are set. The Encinitas Street Fair is back and this year it has an added stage to expand your entertainment options.

“We try to go local first,” said Dody Tucker, Executive Director of DEMA, the Downtown Encinitas MainStreet Association. “We try to get different sounds.”

Tucker and Carris Rhodes, DEMA program assistant, are responsible for choosing and booking the entertainment.

“So I think it is kind of going to be a goal of ours, to make sure we incorporate at least, you know, four or five different music types into the street fair,” Rhodes said.

Certainly the mixture of musical genres is a strength of the entertainment schedule and adds to the strength of the overall fair, as well.

The street fair will be held Saturday, April 26, and Sunday, April 27. The hours both days will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The four stages will be located along Highway 101.

The Hansen Surf Board Community Stage will be at F Street and Highway 101. The Karl Strauss Beer Garden Stage will be in the Lumberyard parking lot at I Street and Highway 101. The Lumberyard Stage will be located at the center courtyard at the Lumberyard on Highway 101. The fourth stage is the Encinitas School of Music Stage located in the 7-Eleven parking lot at D Street and Highway 101.

This year, a fourth stage was added to the entertainment lineup. The stage is being provided by the Encinitas School of Music. The school received a grant from the City of Encinitas and as part of that grant they are required to provide this stage.

The schedule for the Encinitas School of Music stage for April 26, is 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m. Russell Castiglione; 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. Tri-Force; 2:30 p.m. Encinitas School of Music; 4 p.m. ESOM Big Band.

The schedule for the Encinitas School of Music stage for April 27 is 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m. Peter Hall; 1: 30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. Tri-Force; 2:30 p.m. Encinitas School of Music; 4 p.m. ESOM Big Band.

Big band music appeals to fans of all ages and in this case the ESOM Big Band has members all ages, ranging from 9 years old to 55, according to Encinitas School of Music Executive Director Stephen Rollins.

“They do big band slash Jazz,” Rollins said. “A lot of the classic jazz standards, ‘Satin Doll’ and ‘Take Five,’ those are some of the standards they play.”

According to Rollins, they even do a cover of the Carlos Santana’s “Oye Como Va.”

The Hansen Surf Board Community Stage will offer community based and family oriented entertainment. The Courtyard Stage will give you a chance to hear some music you might not hear that often, played by some talented musicians.

“They are local and they are incredible artists,” Tucker said about the Super Strings, a Bluegrass band made up of local musicians. They formed almost three years ago through local jam sessions, according to Bill Frisbee, the band’s guitar player.

“It was supposed to be a cream of the crop pickers,” Frisbee said.

Although this sort of local super group of pickers is very talented, they and their music are very accessible to fans and newcomers alike. “That’s a unique thing about Bluegrass music, it’s approachable,” Frisbee explained. “It’s a really familial feel.”

You can see them and other groups at the Courtyard Stage. The schedule for April 26 is 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Super Stings; 2 p.m.-4:30 p.m. Uplift Band. The schedule for April 27 is 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Adrienne Nims & Spirit Wind; 2 p.m.-4 p.m. David Correa & Cascada.

The fourth stage is the Beer Garden Stage. This year it offers someone who is tied to a legend. The Blues Gypsys’ guitarist and singer, Ricky Parish, played with blues god John Lee Hooker for a couple of years.

“It was an education that I would have never got anywhere else,” Parish said about his time with Hooker.

Parish and the rest of the Gypsys will be promoting their second album, “Another Card in the Hat,” which was scheduled out on April 15. This will be the band’s first time playing the street fair and it will be good chance to promote their album and spread their message about the blues.

“It tells a story and the story makes people feel better because people can relate to it,” Parish said about the Blues.

You can see The Blues Gypsys and others at the Beer Garden Stage. The schedule for April 26 is 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. The Blues Gypsys; 2:30 p.m.-5 p.m. Michael J and The Mighty Cash Cats. The schedule for April 27 is 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. The Corvettes; 2:30 p.m.-5 p.m. Bozanni Brothers.
“It’s gonna be a lot of fun,” Parish said.
